SOME married people on Monday expressed divergent views on the practice of couples wearing uniform outfits for public outings. The couples spoke in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria, (NAN) in Lagos.

While some married people said the practice was awkward, others saw it as a demonstration of unity, love and affection for one another. Mrs Juliet Osuzuigbo, a newly married woman, said that uniform outfit among couples was an external show of their internal love.

“This act by couples wearing uniform outfit is an outward sign of togetherness or unity between the couples. It exposes their identity because you can easily identify them with their outlook in a gathering,” she said.

According to the young bride, when a couple is proud of each other, they want to show it off with their uniform outfit. However, Mr Paul Cee, who had spent 15 years in marriage, said though the practice was cool, there should be careful selection of colours.

“They should take time to choose colour and style that is cool on the couple; not just cool on one of the couple and not so cool on the other because colours are gender-sensitive,” he said.

An entertainment promoter who is single, Adelokiki Adeyomi, said couples who decided to go on uniform outfits just wanted to single themselves out as being unique.

“When they wear uniform clothes, their uniqueness makes them outstanding as compared to other couples who prefer otherwise. I think it also depends on their level of relationship and understanding, such an act is dictated by class or exposure,” Adeyomi said.

For Mrs Patricia Nwabuwa, a school principal, couples wearing same outfit is a wonderful practice that promotes unity. “It shows unity, love, understanding, oneness, perfect communication amongst couples; in fact, it is a quick identity amongst a crowd,   based on their outfit,” she said.

Nwabuwa, who had been married for 30 years, believed that having a husband and wife in uniform outfit helped to scare away any intending intruder to the marriage.

“Wearing uniform outfit by couples signifies togetherness and also creates high sense of belonging, it cultivates a special feeling of being loved,” she told NAN.

However, Andy Odogwu, a journalist and publisher, said though he admired couples who preferred dressing on uniform outfit, he did not build the concept with his wife.

” I’m married for about 29 years now and I like couples who wear uniform outfit but I hardly do so. It at times shows intimacy and at times fakes intimacy as well, but whatever the true picture is, people who see them conclude they are intimate,” he said.

He said that such a practice was not a true test of unity existing amongst the couples. NAN reports that a couple with over thirty years of marriage, Mr and Mrs Ikhabomeh, won the Best Couple of the Year 2017 for habitually wearing uniform outfits to church to the admiration of the congregation.
