THE coach of Enugu State under-18 male football team, Anister Izuikem, on Tuesday said his team was ready to win the football competition at the forthcoming National Grassroots Sports in Abuja.

Izuikem, who is also Secretary of the state’s Grassroots Football Association, said in Enugu they were ready because they had been training for the competition for some time now.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the competition will hold from April 19 to April 27.

“ We have been training for more than two weeks now for this national grassroots sports festival and we have played some friendly matches to keep the players fit and to test their ability.

“The state team beat Diamond FC 6-0, Olicon Sporting of Emene 1-0 and will slug it out with FC Inter of Enugu in another friendly match on Wednesday.

“Besides this, it is a fact that Enugu state is still the best in grassroots football in the country and whenever there is a grassroots football competition, anything short of winning the trophy is not accepted,’’ the coach said.

He said while many promises had been made before, with most unfulfilled in terms of winning, he was sure that this time around his team was going to win.

Izuikem said his team was already working towards doing all it needed to win the competition.

“I know that what it takes to win the trophy is to win all your matches in the competition and this has been our mentality. So, I promise that we are going to Abuja to make the state proud.

“Our target is to win the trophy and nothing short of it, come April 27 when the competition will end in Abuja,’’ he added.
