THE Sokoto State Zakkat and Endowment Commission, has urged people in the state to embark on massive tree planting to check desert encroachment.
Malam Muhammad Maidoki, the commission’s Chairman, made the appeal at an event organised to mark the World Environment Day (WED), on Saturday in Dingyadi, Bodinga Local Government Area of the state.
The event, organised by the commission, was to encourage Islamic scholars and all residents, to embrace tree planting in line with the teachings of Islam, for sustainable environmental.
“All living things were created with different functions which are carefully measured and meticulously balanced by the Almighty Allah.
“The environment is God’s creation and to protect it is to preserve it values while the component parts of nature are entities in continuous praise of their creator.
“Moreover, all the laws of nature are laws made by the creator and based on the concept of the absolute continuity of existence,” he said.
“Islamic environmental ethics is based on the concept that all human relationships are established on justice and equity, as such the balance of the universe created by God must also be preserved.
“More so, the environment is not in the service of generation alone rather, it is the gift of God to all ages, past, present and future,” he added.
Maidoki appreciated the commitment of the Sokoto State Government, Sultanate Council and wealthy individuals in the state toward sustaining the activities of the commission.
On his part, the Executive Director, Sokoto State Arabic and Islamic Education Board, Dr Umar Dandinmahe, thanked the commission for organising the programme, saying it would encourage people to embrace tree planting and environmental protection.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that WED is celebrated annually on June 5, to raise awareness and encourage the protection of the environment. (NAN)
