In a bid to ensure free flow of flood waters as well as to promote healthy living by Anambra citizens, relevant agencies have embarked on re-opening of all drainage channels in Awka.

Michael Okonkwo, Anambra commissioner for Environment, leading joint operation with the OCHA Brigades said the exercise would cover not less than 22 streets in Awka metropolis.

He said this during the take-off of the exercise at Eke Awka, Market on Zik’s Avenue.

Okonkwo decried unhealthy manner at which people clog the gutters and litter the environment with wastes that ought to have been deposited into designated wastes bins.

He added that such attitudes were unpatriotic, particularly to the government agencies charged with maintaining clean and healthy environment.

Okonkwo urged Ndi Anambra to partner with the state government to realise the vision of Goveronr Willie Obiano, who at all times desired the best for his people.

He, however, cautioned those bent on defacing the environment with their nefarious and environmentally unfriendly disposal of wastes noting this would sometime in future attract sanctions, ranging from fines to imprisonment.

A similar exercise had since been ongoing at the commercial city of Onitsha and would later be extended to Nnewi, an Anambra industrial city.
