Governor Willie Obiano has appealed to the Federal Government, groups and donor agencies to assist Anambra government to offer succour to victims of flood disasters in many riverrine communities of the state.

Obiano made the appeal after his tour of some riverrine communities ravaged by flooding in Ogbaru, Anambra East and West and Ayamelum areas of the state.

The governor was accompanied on the tour by A. Ahmed, a Navy captain and the commander Naval Outpost, Onitsha, and some members of the State Executive Council.

They undertook a tour of the riverrine communities, six nautical miles through the River Niger before proceeding to Holding Centres for displaced persons at LG Headquarters, Atani, St. James Church and the Central School, Odekpe.

At one of the centres at Ogbaru Local Government Secretariat, Atani, Obiano pledged to provide them with food, water and drugs.

During the tour, it was observed that thousands of residents of some riverrine communities had been displaced by the floodwaters including the Naval Outpost at Odekpe and the Atani Police Station.

At the Central School, Odekpe, Obiano promised to make the environment conducive by providing them electricity and other conveniences.

He enjoined the security agencies to give adequate protection to the displaced persons to guard against any form of molestation.

“The situation is alarming and I am urging the residents to relocate. Their names will be collated to determine the help to offer them when the flood must have receded.

“I sincerely sympathise with the victims over loss of their belongings and I assure them of the state government’s assistance,” Obiano said.

The flood displaced hundreds of families who are now camped in some of the 28 holding centres being created across eight Local Government Areas of the state.

Several residential buildings, schools, Churches, markets and public places were also submerged by the rampaging floodwaters.
