Delta adopts measures to curb plastic pollution

THE Delta State Government on Tuesday that it had started to open the drains, canals and natural waterways in parts of the state to curb plastic pollution and other health hazards.

The state Commissioner for Environment, Mr John Nani, said this in Asaba when he addressed newsmen on activities to commemorate the 2018 World Environment Day with the theme, “Reducing Plastic Pollution”.

Nani said that the exercise was to check the effects of flooding on the citizens of the state during the rainy season.

Nani said that the drains and canals opened were those in Warri, Sapele, Nana Creek, Koko, Aghalokpe, Isheagu, Anwai River, Amilimocha Waterways and Asaba.

He said that the state had also carried out enlightenment and sensitisation campaigns among the residents of the state on the need for them to guide against flooding.

The commissioner said that this measure was to checkmate the spread of diseases and ensure that residents observed personal hygiene, keep their environments clean and healthy.

The commissioner warned the public against dumping plastics inside drains as waste saying that such would not decompose.

“When they flow from the drains into the river, they are consumed by fish.

“When people consumed such fish, they may be infected by cancer from it, ’’ he said.

The commissioner said that the state government would soon start another campaign against plastic pollution to protect and preserve its citizens’ sources of water, food, medicine and shelter.

He said. “As a member of the global community, Delta is making frantic efforts to tackle the enormous environmental challenges being faced by the state.” (NAN)
