A Gombe based Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), Society for the Restoration of Nature, says it has planted 10,000 trees across the state in the last five years.
Malam Inuwa Abdullahi Coordinator of the NGO disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Gombe on Thursday.
Abdullahi said the trees were planted across villages as well as Gombe metropolis.
He said that most of the trees planted were wind breakers, economic and non-economic trees.
“In the last five years, apart from tree planting, we have done enlightenment on the need to sustain the environment as man’s common heritage.
“We have concluded arrangements to plant 4,000 trees this year and distribute to individuals and organizations to reduce the effects of desertification as well as protect the environment.
“I plead with the general public to imbibe the culture of tree planting and curtail the menace of desert encroachment,’’ he said.
He commended the Nigeria Erosion Watershed Management Agency (NEWMAP) a World Bank assisted project under the Federal Ministry of Environment, for allocating 300 hectares of woodlot to Gombe State.
Abdullahi said the woodlot would prevent desert encroachment and bring back the lost glory of the environment. (NAN)
