The federal government has promised to send relief more materials, particularly food to victims of flood disasters in some parts of Anambra State. Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo announced this during his visit to Anambra to assess the level of flood devastation in some flood-raved areas in the state.

Osinbajo, who visited Umueze Anam, Anambra West Local Government Area, witnessed some families evacuating their flood ravaged-homes. He noted that the FG had declared the area disaster zone, saying it would deploy more resources to alleviate the sufferings of the people. According to the VP, “I flew over those disaster areas and witnessed the rise in water levels especially, in Onitsha, Ogbaru, Awka North, Coscharis Farms and other places.

“We have directed the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA,  to continue deploy relief materials to various Holding Centres and settlements, even in areas, where some had refused to evacuate their homes,’’ Osinbajo said.

While commending Governor Willie Obiano for prompt response to the situation, the vice-president stressed that he would partner the state government to ensure proper management of donated resources.

Receiving the vice-president, Obiano recalled that he had earlier visited those areas to ascertain the level of disaster.

He observed that the disaster did not only submerge their home but their farms as well, which were their major source of livelihood.

Igwe Christopher Idigo, traditional ruler of Aguleri, called the FG to partner hydrologists to provide lasting solutions to the flood problems by creating dams that would absorb water from Rivers Niger and Benue.

One of the victims, Friday Ekwuoba, a farmer, noted that it was regrettable that the damage by the flood, adversely affected their means of livelihood.

Ekwuoba, who refused to evaluate from his settlement regardless of the flood, pleaded for federal government’s assistance to enable them to survive the storm.

The vice-president was accompanied on the tour by Chris Ngige, minister of Labour and Employment, Ifeanyi Okowa, the Delta State governor, and Mustapha Maihaja,  director-general of the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA.
