THE Builders and Construction Skilled Artisans Association of Nigeria (BACSAAN) has appealed to the Federal Government to involve the group in its efforts to check the menace of building collapse in the country.

Alhaji Fasasi Jamiu, the National President of the association, made the appeal on Thursday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

Jamiu spoke to NAN on the sideline of the National Council on Land, Housing and Urban Development taking place in Gombe.

He gave assurance that the association would galvanise its members and their expertise to ensure that the phenomenon became a thing of the past “if government carries us along”.

He underscored the need for Nigerians to patronise qualified builders and artisans rather than quacks.

He also expressed the need for the training and retraining of members of the association in modern building technology.

“This will help them to become fully equipped with the relevant skills that will enable them to tackle the menace of building collapse in the country.

“We are appealing to the government to support us to do our best; there are many Nigerians that have no handiwork.

“There are professional artisans in Nigeria but their services are not being utilised by engineers and contractors.

“They engage quacks because they prefer cheap labour.”

Jamiu also appealed to the Federal Government to consider the association’s memo presented at the 7th meeting of the council.

“Our memo proferred solutions to the myriads of challenges facing the building industry in Nigeria.

“We believe that the recommendations would successfully address the challenges, if the Federal Government would apply them,” he said. (NAN)
