KANO State House of Assembly on Tuesday adopted a motion calling on the state government to quickly reconstruct the bridge linking Shanono, Gwarzo and Bichi Local Government areas of the state.

The bridge which collapsed a week ago after heavy downpours, also links Katsina and Kaduna states, as well as parts of Niger Republic.

Ali Ibrahim-Shanono, representing Bagwai/Shanono constituency, moved the motion under matters of urgent importance during the assembly’s sitting, presided by the Speaker, Abdulazeez Garba-Gafasa.

Ibrahim-Shanono said motorists and residents now go through a lot of hardship getting to their destinations since the collapse of the bridge.

“The collapse of this bridge has caused increase in transportation fares because commercial vehicle drivers now take alternative routes which are longer to get to their destinations,” he added.

He noted that the road through which the bridge is located is a major road for farmers and traders going for businesses at the Dawanau grains market.

The assembly after contributions by members, adopted the motion and called on the state government to immediately reconstruct the bridge.

Similarly, the assembly also called on Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje to complete the road linking Kawo Jirga, Tishama, Kawo and Giginyu in Tarauni local government area.

The motion presented by the member representing Tarauni constituency, Alhaji Lawal Rabi’u, was also adopted by the Assembly.

According to Rabi’u, work on the road had reached Kawo Jirgi when it stopped, causing untold hardships to those plying it.

He appealed to the assembly to find out why the project stopped and whether compensation was paid.
