The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) on Wednesday distributed relief materials to 2018 flood victims in 10 local government areas of Niger.

Director General of NEMA, Alhaji Mustapha Maihaja, who flagged off the distribution of the items in Minna, said the gesture was to provide relief to the plight of victims and cushion the effects of the disaster.

Maihaja, who was represented by Alhaji Ahmed Sani, Head of Finance and Account, NEMA Minna Operational Office, disclosed that 210 grinding machines, 250 sewing machines and 250 pumping machines would be distributed.

He said the affected councils included Mokwa, Agaie, Lapai, Borgu, Lavun, Katcha, Gbako, Shiroro, Bosso and Rafi.

“These items are for distribution to victims of the disaster who lost their sources of livelihood and income to the flood phenomenon in 2018.

“This is government’s way of supporting these victims to get back on their toes and get something doing that will put food on their tables,” Maihaja said.

He admonished the beneficiaries to make judicious use of the items to improve their standard of living.

Also, Alhaji Ahmed Inga, Director General of Niger State Emergency Management Agency (N-SEMA), said that the state government had distributed relief materials worth N65 million to the 2018 flood victims in the state.

Inga, who was represented by Alhaji Garba Salihu, Director, Relief and Rehabilitation of N-SEMA, said that about 17,321 people had their houses and farmlands submerged during the flood disaster.

“The state had given its own relief assistance before the Federal Government support, which will go a long way in reducing the sufferings of the flood victims,” he said.

Malama Aisha Abubakar, one of the victims, appreciated the support of the Federal Government and said that the items would reduce the effects of the disaster on her family.

Following the declaration of National Emergency on flood in 12 states in 2018, the Federal Government immediately organised an Emergency Operation Centre to assess the magnitude of the damage by the flood.

The assessment was followed by the distribution of humanitarian relief support, in form of food and non-food items to the affected persons across the affected states. (NAN)
