CENTRE for Peace and Environmental Justice (CEPEJ) a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), has appealed to Nigerians, especially those living in the Niger Delta region to desist from indiscriminate dumping of plastics, to protect the environment.

The Coordinator of the organisation, Mr Sheriff Mulade, made the appeal while commemorating the 2018 World Environment Day with the theme: “Beat plastic pollution’’ on Tuesday in Asaba.

Mulade also appealed to stakeholders, relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to help create more awareness on the dangers of indiscriminate disposal of plastics to our environment.

He stressed the need for Nigerians to cultivate the habit of protecting their environments.

He said, “plastics pollution is one of the biggest environmental concerns facing us today and this has constituted a global problem.

“CEPEJ will soon be visiting parks, markets, roads and public institutions to raise awareness that everyone has a role to play in taking care of their immediate environment.

“The use of plastics has become a serious challenge because of its widespread; they are easily available, cheap and light and this has constituted a menace.

“Improper disposal of plastics also poses problems to our environment because we see our canals and water channels blocked by these polythene bags’’.

Mulade said the production of plastics involved emission of obnoxious gases posed serious health problems to the workers and neighbourhood.

“Plastics can also be toxic and harmful to the human health. Many of these plastics also end up in rivers and oceans and thus endangering our aquatic life,’’ he said. (NAN)
