Expert urges teachers to embrace professional tech. devt

A computer education tutor, Mr Balarabe Isah, has called on teachers in the country to embrace professional technological development in line with extant global trends.

Isah, the founder of Abuja-based Text Digital Hub made the call on Wednesday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja to commemorate the World Teachers’ Day.

World teachers’ day also referred to as International Teachers’ Day is celebrated annual across the world on Oct. 5.

Isah said, ”as the nature of teaching and learning is changing, effective teacher professional development is important.

”Teachers are the single most important school-based determinants of students’ learning, and therefore at the heart of the response to the change.

“COVID-19 pandemic changed the nature of teaching and learning globally and to match these changes in our educational systems, effective teacher professional development is required.

“ Consideration must be given to the evolving demands placed on the work force which teachers are a part of by  ensuring they are prepared and supported through professional development in science and technology.”

He urged teachers to leverage on free online science and technology courses and opportunities.

“ By leveraging these offers, they can be able to enhance access, participation, engagement, and continued application of new skills in the classroom,” Isah said.

He also urged school proprietors to invest in technology and support their teachers to improve their skills technologically, in practical ways beyond traditional ways.

Isah added that technologically improved teachers can increase students’ engagement in the classroom, adding, ”it can help students  acquire the necessary skills to succeed in their future careers.

“Effective use of digital learning tools in classrooms can also help teachers improve their lesson plans and facilitate personalised learning. It also helps students build essential 21st-century skills.

“Virtual classrooms, video, augmented reality (AR), robots, and other technology tools will make classes more lively, create more inclusive learning environments and enable teachers to collect data on student performance faster.’’ (NAN)
