FG Pays Eagles, Falcons Their Dues

THE Federal Government on Friday, December 16, released a total sum of N471.8m for the payment of the salaries and allowances of Super Eagles and Super Falcons. The office of the Accountant General of the Federation released the mandate to Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, for payment of naira equivalent of US$1,173,820.00 at N305 per dollar to Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, for the payment of the outstanding winning bonuses for Super Eagles in the 2018 World Cup Qualifying Matches and for the Super Falcons’ participation in the 10th Women’s Africa nations Cup.

The payment was made sequel to the approval from Kemi Adeosun, minister of Finance, for the said amount. The mandate, which is a sum of N358 million, was paid by the CBN on Thursday, December 15, according to a statement signed by Kenechukwu N, on behalf of the Accountant General, said.

Similarly, another mandate for N113.8 million has also been released by Office of Accountant General of the Federation for the payment of wining bonus for Super Eagles in the 2018 World Cup Qualifying matches; and for the Super Falcon’s participation in the 10th Women’s Africa Nation’s Cup. The amount has also been paid to the NFF and was equally sequel to the approval of the minister of finance.

The payment came after members of Super Falcons demonstrated in Abuja demanding payment of their outstanding bonuses. The female football players had protested non-payment of allowances at the National Assembly Complex on Wednesday, December 14, carrying placards with various inscriptions demanding they be paid their entitlements and vowed not to release the trophy they won in Cameroon until they were paid.

The ladies had been holed up at their Abuja hotel since they returned to Nigeria from Cameroon in protest over the non-payment of their entitlements despite reassurances from top officials including Solomon Dalung, minster of Sports and Youth Development.

President Muhammadu Buhari, had on hearing about the protest by the Falcons, authorised the payment within 24 hours.
