A soldier was killed and nine others wounded as troops fought Abu Sayyaf extremists in the southern Philippine Sulu Province on Monday, a military report said.

According to the report, troops were engaged in a fierce firefight with an undetermined number of Abu Sayyaf extremists in a remote village in Patikul town in Sulu around noontime on Monday.

Maj.-Gen. Corleto Vinluan, commander of the joint task force dealing with the Abu Sayyaf extremists, said “the troops are still pursuing the withdrawing enemies who left several bloodstains on their tracks’’.

“The skirmishes between our forces and the Abu Sayyaf terrorists persist,’’ Lieut-Gen. Cirilito Sobejana, commander of the Military’s Western Mindanao Command, said.

The Abu Sayyaf group is considered the smallest but the most violent of the extremist groups in the southern Philippines.

The group, which has an estimated 400 fighters, is active in the impoverished island provinces of Sulu and Basilan.
