AUSTRALIA is still battling bushfires in the eastern state of Queensland and in the country’s most populous state of New South Wales.

As of Friday afternoon, more than 60 blazes were still burning across Queensland, according to Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES.

And also more than 1,300 firefighters were battling more than 68 fires in New South Wales, the Rural Fire Service (RFS) said.

Fire services braced for another day of dangerous fire conditions as temperatures rose and winds picked up after several days of respite.

The emergency services have been issuing constant updates instructing residents on the severity of fires in their area all week, with “leave now” warnings issued for two areas in Queensland hit by the bushfires, and “prepare to leave” to three more on Friday afternoon.

Most of Queensland is still under a state of fire emergency.

Around 1,000 firefighters have been fighting the bushfires in Queensland, where more than 130,000 hectares of land has burnt since the bushfire season saw an early start in October this year.

Meanwhile in New South Wales, where more than 1.1 million hectares of land has already burned this bushfire season, “extreme” conditions have been downgraded but the fire danger rating is still listed as “severe” in several regions due to dry and windy weather on Friday.

Four people have died since the bushfires began in October.
