GERMANY’s opposition free-market liberal Free Democratic Party (FDP) needs to recruit more women, its leader said on Tuesday.

According to the leader, Christian Lindner, if we want to campaign for a change in direction in Germany at the next general election in 2021, then we have to use the time until then to become better.

“That means, the FDP must actively seek female voters, female members and managers.

“I see untapped potential there,’’ Lindner said.

A look at the executive committee and executive board of the party however revealed the extent of the problem.

“Only three out of 18 members of the national executive committee are women, or 17 per cent, while the executive board is slightly better with nine out of 43, or 21 per cent,’’ he noted.

Lindner argued that with his party’s election manifesto, which includes professional development opportunities and flexible compatibility of family and job, the FDP is “actually the best choice for women who lead self-determined lives.”

“Women who don’t want to vote for left-wing economic policies and ideologically defined gender politics but who also reject the old role models of the Bavarian conservative Christian Social Union should invigorate the FDP as new members and exert influence.

“We need their help to further develop our party,’’ Lindner added.

Lindner said the party would address the issue at its upcoming conference in the middle of May. (Dpa/NAN)
