The Kaduna State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on Wednesday warned drivers plying Kaduna-Zaria expressway against reckless driving to curb avoidable accidents.
The Sector Commander, Umar Ibrahim gave the warning during a meeting with Central Working Committee (CWC) of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Kaduna.
Ibrahim, who was represented at the meeting by the command’s Head of Operations, Deputy Corps Commander Salisu Galandunci, lamented the alarming rates of avoidable accident along Kaduna – Zaria express way.
He explained that the meeting with the union became necessary to have an understanding with the body on ways to reduce accidents and save lives.
According to him, motorists have continued their recklessness and unprofessional driving attitude in spite of diversions along the road and the command’s effort to stem the tide.
“The command is working tirelessly, particularly in public enlightenment along with pre-trip checks on vehicles before take-off and after loading, yet this menace has continued unabated.
“Also, the FRSC National Headquarters has deployed additional 50 personnel to the diversions along the expressway to maintain free flow of traffic.
“However, drivers have remained adamant in obeying traffic rules and heeding to our warnings and thus causing series of accidents, particularly along the diversion areas due to inpatients.
“The accidents and the long hours of gridlock could be avoided if only driver’s will heed to our warnings and advice,” Ibrahim said.
On Kaduna – Abuja expressway, the commander warned drivers against driving at night, adding that the command will step up its enlightenment campaign to ensure accident-free roads.
He added that the FRSC has made Zuba – Zaria expressway a Corridor Command along with five other corridors created across the country to reduce the rate of accidents.
Ibrahim thanked the union for assisting the corps in reducing accidents across the country.
Responding, the acting Chairman of the union in the state, Alhaji Ibrahim Bala, thanked FRSC for insisting on ensuring sanity on the road through their consistent enlightenment and professional advice.
Bala pledged the union’s continued partnership in ensuring that drivers obey all traffic rules as a critical measure of preventing accidents.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Federal Government had in June 2018 flagged off the reconstruction of the Abuja – Kaduna – Zaria – Kano road with a 36-month completion period. (NAN)
