THE Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) says it will continue to partner with stakeholders on the creation of workstations for the purpose of training and re-training of drivers to ensure safety on highways.
The FRSC Corps Marshall, Dr Boboye Oyeyemi, stated this during the inauguration of Obafemi Awolowo (OAU) Driving School and Drivers’ Licence Centre, on Thursday in Ile-Ife, Osun.
He noted that the centre, located within an academic environment, would further help to improve intellectualism on highways and enhance safety standards in the transport system.
Oyeyemi said that the centre, initiated by the OAU authorities, would open more opportunities for private partnerships.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the driving school, with registration number: TOI/RTV/141, is registered with Osun government, with approval received from FRSC in October 2020.
Oyeyemi said, “Driving schools are now becoming models which must be giving consideration to help train and retrain drivers to ensure safety on highways.
“I want to thank the Vice-Chancellor for the wonderful initiative, being the first university to have a workstation and driving school that will give undergraduates the ability to leverage on the opportunity at their corridor,” he said.
The corps marshal further commended the state government for its support in ensuring that accidents on highways were reduced.
He appealed to the state government to create more workstation across the state, adding that the corps would provide necessary equipment and apparatus needed for its kick-off.
“I believe that if the state government can look into the area of creating more workstations, it would create more internal revenue for the state.
“Also, the state government should look in the area of creating more driving schools across the three senatorial districts in the state,” Oyeyemi said.
In his remarks, Gov. Gboyega Oyetola commended FRSC for reducing carnages on the highways, especially in the state.
Oyetola said that his administration would look into the areas itemised by the corps marshal through private partnership and support from the FRSC.
He appealed to motorists to be more careful when using the highways in order to avoid any form of accidents that might lead to loss of lives and property.
The OAU ViceChancellor, Prof . Eyitope Ogunbodede, praised the efforts of the state government and the corps at ensuring that the initiative was a huge success.
“The university has benefitted from the state government since the inception of the Gov. Oyetola-led administration.
“The administration was magnanimous enough to look into the huge tax being owed by the university authorities. We are, indeed, grateful,” he said.
The vice-chancellor assured that registration of drivers into the school would be physical to ensure that healthy and well-fitted individuals were enrolled for training.
