THE position of the Southern Governors Forum’s on open grazing is still eliciting reactions from an aide to President Muhammadu Buhari. On Monday, May 24, Garba Shehu, senior special assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari described the governor’s ban on open grazing as politicking with a serious security issues and an attempt at show of power.

Shehu said that the decision of the Southern governors in Asaba, Delta state, was a violation of the constitutional right of Nigerians to live and do business in any part of the country, irrespective of such citizen’s state of origin.

Garba’s statement on behalf of his principal noted that Buhari had already approved specific measures to bring the incessant farmers/herders clashes to an end, adding that the position of the governors will not resolve the crisis, which has been on in the country for decades.

He also questioned the legality of the governors action, stating that it violates the constitutional right of Nigerians to live and do business in any part of the country, irrespective of such citizen’s state of origin.

Shehu’s statement is coming at a time some governors of the North have supported the ban on open grazing, including Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje of Kano State who has supported ranching and banning the age old practice of cattle rearing which is not all that financial rewarding. Recently, Ganduje advised herders to come to Kano as he will provide land for their ranches.
