Anambra Commissioner for Trade set to address challenges of cooperative societies

The Anambra  Commissioner for Trade, Commerce, Market and Wealth Creation, Mr Uche Okafor, has promised to address the challenges bedeviling cooperative societies in the state.

Okafor made the promise in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Awka.

He said that part of the efforts was the in–house training of its officers, which was concluded on Sept. 24, after a three-day training by experts on cooperative matters.

Okafor said that cooperative societies under the ministry should seriously take up the responsibility of the economic development of the state,  having had sound training in the area.

“We initiated the in-house training in other to bring out the best in the officers for the development of the state and would not condone any lapse,” he said.

He said the training was apt because of the increasing pressure from changing environment, which demanded training and re-training of staff , to enable them brace up to new trends in the world of cooperative socities.

Okafor said that the training would expose the officers to the required knowledge of the structure, tiers and classification of cooperatives.

He also noted that cooperative societies had contributed immensely to agriculture production and marketing in the state.

He said that lack of adequate financing for cooperative’s project was identified as the major problem confronting the growth and development of the society in state and assured that it would be addressed.

Okafor said that cooperative societies under his watch would be well funded with the necessary machinery provided, to boost their activities for the growth of the state.

“We know the important role cooperative societies play in the development of the state, so it would not be toyed with,” he said.

He urged the officers of the cooperative societies from the 21 local government areas of the state, who gained from the training exercise to use the teachings acquired effectively for the common good of the state and the public. (NAN)
