Principal decries dilapidation of infrastructure, call for FG’s urgent intervention

Mrs Halima Bawa, the Principal of Junior Secondary School Model, Maitama District of Abuja, on Tuesday decried the dilapidation of school structures and classrooms, calling for Federal Government’s urgent intervention.

Bawa made the call, when the wife of the Vice President, Mrs Dolapo Osinbajo, visited the school with some `Concerned Mothers’ Initiative` to address the students of the school on the message of `Hope for the Future.`

She appealed to the government for assistance for the rehabilitation of including the fence which gave in recently and has become a security risk for the students.

Bawa listed other areas of challenges to include lack of laboratories, skill acquisition centres and shortage of seats for the students and threat by erosion within the school premises among others.

She expressed gratitude for the visit saying, “It is a rare opportunity for us here for the vice president`s wife to even think of our school.

“This has never happened since the school existence and for her to even think of coming, I appreciate her very well.

“And I also appreciate mothers that came with her and the message they gave to the children is essential one and I believed they have gain enough. “

Similarly, Alhaji Ibrahim Maliki, Chairman, Parents, Teachers Association (PTA), expressed gratitude to the Mrs Osinbajo`s visit.

Maliki explained that through the development levy approval by the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), the association had started replacing some of the broken down walls and windows in some classes.

He appealed to the government to pay more attention to education by paying regular visit to schools especially in the area of infrastructural development or rehabilitation of old structures.

“The PTA has already started something by replacing some of the windows from development levy which UBEC had approved and we are planning to do more and to replace some seats, “ he said.

Earlier, Osinbajo who was represented by Mrs Onaolapo Olatoyosi said the essence of their visit was to educate the children on the effects of the prevailing social vices in the society through social media.

According to her, if urgent actions are not taking by distracting the mines of the younger ones from the acts, it might ruin their hope of future.

“Our mission here is to give the children the message of hope, there is a lot of depression, people are sad.

“And social media is creating too much illusion that people will just believe that everything is rosary on social media and it is not. So the message we have for them is the message of hope of future, “ she said.

Miss Chisom Ugwu, a 14-year old student also expressed happiness on the wife of Vice President`s visit to their school, saying it is impacting though she was not physically present.

News Agency of Nigeria reports that Concerned Mothers’ Initiative, is a programme of Osinbajo, aimed at  addressing the effects of the involvement of youth on social vices through social media. (NAN)
