A German aid organisation that operates in the region said on Friday that a rescue ship in the Mediterranean took 211 migrants on board in the course of two days.

The latest rescue by the Sea-Watch 3 vessel was on Thursday night, as a small boat with 46 migrants were travelling on the water, the Sea-Watch organisation said.

Two migrant boats in distress were intercepted the day before.

“We need a port of safety immediately’’ Sea-Watch tweeted on Friday.

The Sea-Watch 3 was currently traveling between Italy and Malta.

Blaming the coronavirus pandemic, both countries have declared themselves unsafe havens for the migrants attempting to reach Europe from North Africa.

Rescue vessels have recently been allowed ashore, but only after lengthy negotiations.
