GERMAN Chancellor Olaf Scholz said there was a clear understanding that the European Commission would propose rules to allow new passenger cars with combustion engines.

The engines running on so-called e-fuels were to be registered after 2035.

“That is already the consensus,’’ Scholz said before the EU leaders summit in Brussels, stressing this is part of the negotiations to agree on the phase-out of the combustion engine in the European Union.

“The only thing left to do now is to find the right way to implement the promise, which was given by the commission a long time ago,’’ Scholz said.

Talks between the commission and the German government department to settle the issue are on the right track, he added. (dpa/NAN)
