MAJ.-Gen. Godwin Mutkut, General Officer Commanding (GOC) 8 Division, Nigerian Army, Sokoto, on Tuesday urged journalists to always observe balanced reportage of events in their professional duties.

Mutkut made the call when the leadership of the state Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) paid him a courtesy visit in his office.

He said balanced, fair, objective and factual reports would enhance security as well as avoid misleading and sensational stories.

He urged news reporters to ensure accuracy in their reports, emphasising the collective responsibility to contribute towards a peaceful nation.

The GOC assured of the openness of the Nigerian Army to confirm any report about its operations and stressed the need to avoid misleading information that could aid criminals.

“We appreciate journalists who provide fair reportage by hearing from all sides, as opposed to purveyors of fake reports who often lack balance,” he said.

Mutkut expressed gratitude for the visit and assured of the Nigerian Army’s commitment to collaborate with journalists to restore peace and security in the country.

The State NUJ Chairman, Mallam Dalhatu Abdullahi, thanked the GOC and the entire division for their positive relationship with working journalists in Sokoto.

Abdullahi pledged the readiness of the union to work closely with Nigerian Army and other security agencies towards protection and promotion of national interests.

He lauded the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, for his vision in enhancing civil-military relations.

He expressed appreciation to the security agencies for the successes in the fight against security challenges posed by enemies of the country. (NAN)
