The Archbishop of Lagos, His Grace, Alfred Martins, says good work without faith in God is philanthropy, which will not lead anyone to salvation.

Martins made this assertion during his homily at the Sunday Mass at the Holy Cross Cathedral in Lagos.

He said goodwork without faith was philanthropy, which cannot take anyone to heaven.

“In the gospel of the day taken from the book of Mathew 20 from verse 1-16, Martins said it was the mercy of God and not people’s good work that would take them to heaven.

“If God is generous to other people, we need not to be envious. We need to be contented,” he said.

He added that everyone should always plead for the mercy of God, adding that it was His mercy, that brings forgiveness and salvation.

While citing the example of the thief that died with Jesus, he said the thief did not have so many good works but Jesus had mercy on him and he was saved.

He prayed that our sacrifice would be acceptable by the Father in Jesus Name.

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the first reading was taken from Isaiah 55 verse 6-9, while the second reading was from Philippians 1 verse 20. (NAN)
