The Special Adviser to Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi on Inter -State Affairs, Mr Madus Mathias has vowed to renovate the abandoned 150-metre railway subway in the state capital.

Mathias made the vow in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu on Friday.

He said that the subway built over 50 years ago had been neglected by both the state and federal governments.

Mathias said that the subway was dirty and taken over by weed while walls were already damaged.

According to him, the subway tunnel pedestrian link if revived will connect Okpara Avenue and Ogui areas of the state.

“This will provide students, civil servants, bankers and business people with shorter and easy route to different places within the state.

“It also saves time and money for thousands who make use of the tunnel as an alternative bypass.

“On my part, I want to use the project to raise hope for many people in Enugu state especially children who mostly make use of the tunnel,” Mathias said.

He noted that beautiful design and the natural scenery of the environment and the tunnel would make an unbearable tourist attraction in the state.

“Leading by example, I have commenced daily personal environmental clean-up at the tunnel and I will not rest until it is given desired attention,” he added.

The Special Adviser called on governments, private organisations and investors to support his effort in bringing life to the long, abandoned tunnel.

He stressed that an annual estimate of N100 million would be required to rebrand and revive the tunnel, adding that he would want it named after Gov. Ugwuanyi.

NAN reports that the tunnel is located between Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium on Ogui Road and Okpara Avenue. (NAN)
