THE Stakeholders in the education sector in the state have been directed to strictly comply with all the COVID-19 pandemic rules in their schools, so as to ward off a second wave of the pandemic.
The Anambra State Deputy Governor, Nkem Okeke, gave the directive during a sensitisation meeting with board members of Post Primary Schools Service Commission and Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board, ASUBEB, Zonal and Education Secretaries, Heads and Principals of Schools in the state.
According to him, lives of Ndi Anambra cannot be compromised especially this period the country is facing a second wave of the Coronavirus outbreak.
He noted that the education sector is not left out, as pupils and students are at greater risk of contracting the virus.
Okeke advised the teachers to live by example in observing all the COVID-19 pandemic rules as it would help to keep them at alert.
“The virus is still with us; we must do well to keep it down as the country prepares for the second wave of the virus,’’ he said.
The Commissioner for Health, Vincent Okpala, in his remark said that COVID-19 was no child’s play as Anambra had its fair share of the pandemic.
While commending the teachers for their actions and sacrifices toward ensuring the safety of the children before and after the lockdown, Okpala enjoined the stakeholders in education to ensure that schools still maintained the COVID-19 protocols as that would help to curb the spread of the virus.
“Anambra State is the only state in the southeast to return the lowest positive rate in COVID-19 pandemic but we can do better.
“I urge the head teachers of schools to cooperate with the paramedics, who are going round schools for sample collection,’’ he added.
In her speech, the Commissioner for Basic Education, Prof. Kate Omenugha, urged the teachers to take the awareness message to the grassroots on the need to be at alert against a second wave of COVID-19 pandemic, especially in schools.
“When the pandemic started, we swung into action by starting our teaching-on-air.
“We showed the public that we are a people, who are disciplined and believe that the standards of our children cannot be measured based on our own standards,’’ she said.
She commended the education family of Anambra State for their doggedness.
