NIGER State Government on Sunday solicited the support and cooperation of Fulani herdsmen toward the success of the Bobi Grazing Reserve located in Mariga Local Government Area of the state.

Alhaji Haruna Dukku, the Commissioner for Livestock and Fisheries, said this during a stakeholders meeting with Fulani Herdsmen living at the ranch in Bobi.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the meeting was aimed at educating the herders on the need for their maximum support and participation in modern animal husbandry, and was organised by the State Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries.

Dukku said that it was government’s desires for the herders to ensure production of high quality dairy as failure to meet up with the required quantity would not be tolerated.

He said that basic social amenities such as healthcare services, education, market among others would be provided in the reserve as well as youths and women empowerment to better their living standards.

Dukku said that to ensure security at the reserve, anyone coming in would be profile and issued identity cards, adding that security personnel were stationed to secure the environment.

The commissioner said that about 100 youths within the reserve would be trained and equipped to support security personnel.

Alhaji Tafida Abbas, the Emir of Muri in Taraba, a consultant in the development of the reserve said modern animal husbandry was a way forward in addressing farmers/herders crisis.

He said that the completion of the perimeter fencing of the 31,000 hectare reserve would reduce security challenges such as cattle rustling and kidnapping in the area.

Earlier, Dr Jonathan Wasa, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, reiterated that the success and development of the reserve was hinged on herdsmen support, adding that profiling of the cattle was ongoing to keep record.

Alhaji Bello Taloye, the Leader of the Fulani Herdsmen in the Reserve, expressed concerns over the state of security at the reserve, however, pledged their support and maximum corporation to the development of the reserve.
