THE National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO) and the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTWs) in Niger on Saturday supported the state government’s policy to ban illegal motor parks and commercial motorcycles in the state.

NARTO’s state chairman, Alhaji Hassan Shiroro and Malam Bawa Paiko, Secretary of the branch three of NURTWs, Minna made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Minna.

Shiroro said that the ban on illegal motor parks and commercial motorcycles would tackle the current security challenges affecting the state.

“The security challenges in the state such as kidnapping and insurgency are becoming worrisome.

“The Niger state government discovered that the illegal motor parks and commercial motorcycles were contributing to the security challenges, which necessitated the government action.

“Therefore, we are happy with the government’s decision geared toward improving the security of lives and properties in the state,” he said.

He said that there was the need to allow only motor parks that the government could monitor to operate due to the current insecurity.

The chairman said that the government consulted with the association in its decision.

“You can see that our members are part of the task force monitoring compliance of the policy,” he said, adding that there are recognised motor parks in the 25 Local Government Areas of the state.

“Minna the state capital had many illegal motor parks before now but after the ban seven were approved.

“The motor parks approved for us in Minna, include the Abdulsalam, Central, Kpakungu, Limawa and Sabongari garages.

“Others are Peace motor park, Kure market park, Mobile garage, Niger State Transport Authority and Nice travel garages,” he said.

Shiroro said that the association had over 5,000 members in the state.

Similarly, Paiko told NAN that the measure was the right step in the right direction, adding, “The policy will help the government to know what comes into the state and what goes out”.

He noted that as part of security measures, the union would ensure that every vehicle leaving the garages must go with travelers’ destination manifest to identify the commuters.

“We are doing this in collaboration with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the police to ensure safety,” he said.

Paiko urged members of the public to always patronise recognised motor parks across the state to ensure safety.

“A lot of people enter one chance or kidnappers’ vehicle by the roadside.

“Our motor parks are safe for any journey, especially now that the country is experiencing security challenges,” he said.

He blamed the security challenges across the nation for inadequate personnel among the security agencies.

Paiko appealed to the Federal Government to recruit more personnel into the security services in order to tackle the current insecurity.

NAN reports that the state government recently banned illegal motor parks and commercial motorcycles across the state as part of measures to tackle security challenges.
