Carmelite Prisoners’ Interest Organisation (CAPIO), a non-governmental organisation, has called for the speedy review of the Anambra Administration of Criminal Justice Law, 2010.

The Executive Director of CAPIO, Rev. Fr. Ambrose Ekeroku, made the call on Wednesday while donating COVID-19 preventive materials to the Nigeria Correctional Service, Awka.

Ekeroku said a quick review of the law would help to eliminate the delays often experienced in the dispensation of justice in the state.

He also underscored the need to create adequate public awareness on the content of the law after the review.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the donation included handheld infrared thermometers, 20 gallons of liquid soaps and hand sanitisers.

Others were 50 packets of Vitamin C, 25 tins of Chloroquine tablets for clinical usage, 25 tins of Zinc mineral as well as envelopes for dispensing drugs to help fight COVID-19 pandemic in the centre.

Ekeroku said that CAPIO, with the support of the Irish Embassy in Nigeria, donated the items to help improve the inmates’ living condition and also protect them from contracting the virus.

He said the organisation had strengthened its advocacy for reforms in the criminal justice system and the prison sector in the country.

He further said that CAPIO was building a rehabilitation centre at Oji River in Enugu, where those that had served out their terms would acquire skills that would help them to reintegrate fully in society.

Receiving the items, the Controller, Nigeria Correctional Service, Awka, Mr Emma Nwakeze, thanked the organisation for the gesture.

Nwakeze, represented by the Deputy Controller of Corrections in-charge of Medical Services, Dr Frank Uzoh, said no case of COVID-19 had been reported at the centre.

He said that authorities of the centre were serious about compliance with the COVID-19 protocols.

“We have equipped a room where we quarantine new inmates for 14 days before integrating them with others,” he said.

Nwakeze, who expressed worry over the congestion of the centre, lauded the ongoing decongestion of all the custodial centres in the state by the Chief Judge, Justice Onochie Anyachebelu. (NAN)
