145 child-bearing women, 2,300 children under 5 die daily in Nigeria – UNICEF

A RESEARCHER with  Benin-based Centre for Population and Environmental Development, CPED, Dr. Francis Onojeta has disclosed that an average of 145 Nigerian women of child bearing age die every day, adding that  no fewer than 2,300 children under five years also die daily.

Dr. Onojeta in his presentation on “Innovative Approach to Improving Maternal, Newborn and Child Health, MNCH,” in Nigeria quoted UNICEF as the source of the information on the state of maternal and child heath in Nigeria.

Onojeta, the guest lecturer at an event organised by Centre for Population and Environmental Development, CPED and supported by Think Tank Initiative, TTI, an arm of International Development Research Centre,  described the situation as very worrisome and called for a holistic action against the scourge by all tiers of government in the country.

The event was also attended by Dr. Diakaila Sanoago from Kenya, Prof Emeritus Andrew Onokehoraye, former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Benin, Prof.  Felicia Okoro, Prof. Williams Akpocha and Dr. Wilson Imogan, a former Commissioner for Health in Edo State, among others.    –   Vanguard
