A 30-man medical team constituted by the Dennis Memorial Grammar School, DMGS, the DMGS Old Boys Association, DOBA, Onitsha branch is to storm Umueze Anam to free offer medical treatment to people of the area.

Umueze Anam is located in Anambra East Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The team, to be led by Marcel Nnoba, a veteran, a member of the 1976 set, would treat as many cases as possible in the one-day mission.

Nnamdi Oguno, the president of DOBA, Onitsha, told newsmen in Awka that the mission is at the instance of a Chuks Okoli, Dengramite.

Okoli is also an architect and pastor of an Anglican Church in Umueze Anam, who requested medical assistance to the flock in the area in the aftermath of the flooding that occurred in the area last year.

Oguno explained that the team would go with a bad full of drugs to offer treatment to not just the flock, but anyone, from the area, who would wish to be treated on ailments within the purview of the team.

“This is the first time that DOBA, Onitsha will be undertaking such a mission,’’ added Oguno, a Music don at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.

The area was one of the main communities ravaged by floodwaters, last year, displacing people in its wake, wrecking havoc in farmlands as well as leaving a trail of deaths.

The waters eventually receded and people were back to their farms, and the aftermath came with dieses-infestation and many other ailments.

“Hopefully, the experience from this mission, will inform any future such interventions,’’ Oguno said, stressing that drugs and logistics for the current mission was from donations by well-to-do individuals, particularly old boys the school.

The team of doctors include Nnoba, Chijioke Ezeigwe, Emeka Edokwe, Ogo Jnr., Chinedu Ilokanuno and Gab Menakaya.

He added: “Dr Menakaya is the only none Dengramite, who donated funds and also volunteered to join in the mission.’’

There are pharmacists, Medical Lab scientists, mobilised for the venture.

DMGS, Onitsha was the first secondary school in the South East and second in the defunct Eastern Nigeria, after Hopewadel, Calabar. It was founded in 1925.
