No fewer than 5,500 persons are currently receiving free medical treatment as part of the constituency projects organised by Boniface Okonkwo, the member representing Awka North State Constituency.

The free Medicare is being administered by a team of trained medical doctors in the 10 communities within Awka North Local Government Area of the state.

The communities are Amansea, Ebenebe, Ugbenu, Ugbene, Awba Ofemili, Isuanaocha, Mgbakwu, Urum, Amanuke and Achalla.

Exchanging views with newsmen after flagging-off the project at Amansea Civic Centre, Okonkwo said it was one of his health intervention initiatives to ameliorate the sufferings of his constituents. He said the outreach was to complement the state government’s effort in healthcare delivery system.

“The project is aimed at assisting people with various health challenges in my constituency, particularly the aged, suffering from eye and diabetes problems.

“There are other healthcare programmes, specifically for women and children lined up after the programme,” he added.

According to him, legislators are expected to attract dividends of democracy that have direct bearing on lives of the people.

“There are 12 medical doctors, 25 nurses in the outreach team. We are targeting to treat no fewer than 5,500 patients across the 10 communities designated for this programme, 550 patients in each centre,” Okonkwo explained.

Victor Umeh, a chieftain of the All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA, and Tony Nchekwube, the national secretary, the Support Group, commended the legislator for his kind gesture.

Nchekwube said he decided to identify with the lawmaker in his drive to give his people quality Medicare.

While encouraging people to always go for routine medical check-up, he urged other well-to-do individuals to support government’s effort in providing health services to people at the grassroots.

“Thousands of people are suffering from various health challenges, but due to lack of financial support, cannot go to hospitals,” Nchekwube added.

Ozo Okonkwo, the president-general, Amansea Progressive Union, lauded the initiative and described the benefactor as a blessing to the people of Awka North Constituency.

He noted that the project would assist the elderly, especially women to access eye treatment, urging other political office holders to emulate the lawmaker.

Some of the beneficiaries, Ngozi Ikeanyina and Josiah Obidimma thanked Okonkwo for his magnanimity and prayed for God to bless him.
