Anambra celebrates world Red Cross Day

THE Anambra State Chapter of the Nigerian Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies has joined their counterpart nationwide to celebrate this year’s World Red Cross Day.

The celebration, which was a commemoration of the founder of the organisation, Jean Henry Dunant, was held simultaneously in 187 member-nations of the Red Cross Society with theme: “Love For Humanity.’’

Dunant was born on May 8, 1828 in Geneva, Switzerland.

Peter Emeka Katchy, the chairman, Nigerian Red Cross Society Anambra State Chapter, said the organisation was poised toward offering assistance in humanitarian operation.

Katchy noted that the organisation as part of its humanitarian activities responded to emergencies, funding of humanitarian operations and relief projects to injured persons and victims of disaster and violent conflicts.

“The organisation is focused on highlighting efforts of humanitarian activities all over the world and drawing attention of world leaders and global organisations to the need to embark on rapid response to disasters and funding of such operations.

“It is imperative to create enabling environment to achieve global security and safety which is central to world economic and social order to major pivots of global growth in all facets of human endeavours,’’ he said.

Katchy emphasised the importance of the theme and urged youths to volunteer in humanitarian activities.

He called for establishment of Federal Ministry of National Reconciliation to enhance peaceful co-existence and reduce violence, deaths, hardship and destructions in Nigeria.

Rita Ngozi Nzekwu, the vice-chairman, Red Cross Society, praised Governor Willie Obiano for his immense support in protecting life.

She promised that the Red Cross Society would not relent in its humanitarian support.
