Anambra library board marks 2019 World Cancer Day

THE Anambra State Library Board on February 4 joined the rest of the world to mark 2019 World Cancer Awareness Campaign.

The campaign tagged, “I Am and I Will’’, was a collaboration of the State Library Board and Grand Hermano Academy, Awka.

The event took place at the Catholic Women Organisation, CWO, Hall, at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Ihembosi, Ekwusigo Local Government Area.

Nkechi Udeze, the acting director, Anambra State Library Services, described cancer as non-gender selective.

She urged everyone to hold such campaigns in high esteem and take advantage of it.

Udeze noted that the library started championing cancer awareness campaign under her watch since 2016 as part of innovative services offered by the library.

Geraldine Ikenwa, a health officer, who presented a paper entitled: “Regain and Retain Your Health’’ condemned some health threatening practices that could damage human life.

Such practices include smoking, alcoholism, consumption of artificial foods intake, intake of salt and stress-related issues.

Ikenwa recommended consumption of balance diet as well as eating of fruits, vegetables.

She also emphasised that people must engage in regular physical exercises but must consult doctor on observing any unusual symptoms.

Arinze Ijezie of the General Hospital, Oraifite explained the different types of cancers and their symptoms, saying: “all have no particular cause but can be prevented through healthy living and early detection’’.

He urged everyone to embark on regular checkups and screening.

Chinweikpe Iwuchukwu, a participant lauded the organisers as well as enjoined the people to utilise all they learnt in practice

The event featured cancer walk, which took off from Umuabu Village to Eke Market, Ihembosi as well as questions and answers session.
