In a bid to reverse the trend of medical tourism abroad, Anambra State Government has plans to build world class hospital in the state.

Joe Akabuike, the Anambra State commissioner for Health, who said this in an interview with newsmen in his office, explained that the purpose of partnering with the Indian Medical experts was for medical tourism.

He added that it was the intention of the state government to partner with agencies to make the state the hub of medical tourism in the world, by constructing mega hospital that would offer variety of medical services.

“Since 2014, we have been in partnership with them. They have been coming and going, but now in a bigger way.

“From medical mission to complex surgeries in the heart and other difficult ailments. The essence of it is the transfer of knowledge and technology. It is our wish that we build our own.

“This is an investment destination and Gov. Willie Obiano has made the state business-friendly and people are coming from different places.

“The aim is for people from other places to come for medical attention here,’’ he added.

The commissioner added: “it was not only India that Anambra partner’s with. We also partner with J Nwilo Health Foundation from Atlanta for ‘open heart operations’ at St. Joseph Hospital, Adazi-Nnukwu.

“Remember, there is nothing that is too much to help people to get well,’’ Akabuike said.

On patients to be treated, he said they would be examined to determine those qualified for surgery, while those suffering from other ailments would be treated later.

He enjoined people to avail themselves of this opportunity to be treated, explaining that much publicity had been made for the programme.

On the upkeep of the Indian medical team, he noted that the state government was totally in charge.
