THE Anambra State government is planning to achieve 90 percent access to water supply and sanitation reform policy by 2026. Victor Ezekwo, the programme manager, Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency, RUWASSA, said during interview with newsmen in Awka, the state capital.

According to him, Anambra government has already achieved 90 per cent access to water and 85 per cent access to sanitation in Awka North, South and Aguata Local Government Areas.

The achievement was under joint partnership of the state and UNICEF.

He also added that government would ensure payment of its counterpart fund of N309 million, representing 30 per cent, while UNICEF paid N750 million or 70 per cent of the project cost.

Ezekwo said the task force on sanitation had certified 130 communities in the two LGAs as free from open defecation communities.

He said in appreciation of the state performance, UNICEF approved extension of the programme to Dunukofia LGA with construction of hand pumps, bore holes, solar boreholes and toilets in 336 communities.

“UNICEF will pay N649 million, while the state and local governments are expected to pay counterpart fund of N374 million for execution of the projects,’’ Ezekwo said.

He expressed confidence that the state and LGs would meet their financial obligations in settling its counterpart fund.
