Anambra to introduce new vaccines in routine immunisation

Chioma Ezenyimulu, executive secretary, Anambra State Primary Health Care Development Agency, ASPHCDA, has said that some new vaccines will soon be introduced in routine immunisation in the state.

Ezenyimulu announced this at the opening ceremony of the training on Basic Guide to routine immunisation for service providers in the state at King David Hotel, Awka.

“The vaccines are Human Papilloma virus, HPV, vaccine for the prevention of cervical cancer, Rota virus vaccine for prevention of severe diarrhoea among young children, and men A vaccine for the prevention of cerebrospinal meningitis.

She explained that routine immunisation means the use of vaccine to prevent illnesses such as Tuberculosis, Poliomyelitis, Measles, Tetanus, Whooping cough, Yellow fever and Pneumonia.

Ezenyimulu stressed that the training, which would be given to workers from top health institutions down to those at health facility level, was to update the knowledge of all health workers on Immunisation.

“They will be taught how the different vaccines work, their mode of preservation, and the maintenance of cold chain equipment. They will also be taught how to prepare their micro plans for immunisation campaigns.’’

The executive secretary, urged health workers to take advantage of the opportunity to refresh and improve on their knowledge.

She commended the World Health Organisation for sponsoring the training, noting, with their assistance, Anambra State won the award for the best performing state on immunisation this year.

Nnamdi Uliagbafusi, head, Immunisation and Disease control, ASPHCDA, urged the participants to listen attentively to lectures so that they could pass the knowledge they acquired to their subordinates at their health facilities.

Chinyere Ebede, the WHO state representative, noted that after the training, routine immunisation would be greatly improved on in the state.

“A lot of abnormalities will be amended both at state and local government levels,’’ she said.

Ndidi Nwosu, UNICEF South East Zonal Logistician, urged health workers to pass down all they have learnt to their various health facilities.

She added that Cold Chain Inventory Assessment, CCIA, in the state would be conducted next week.

In a vote of thanks, HOD Health, Onitsha South LGA, Dr Frank Umeh, thanked the executive secretary for her support and good rapport with Local Government Health Workers now under the Agency.
