The Association of Resident Doctors, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu Teaching Hospital, COOUTH, Awka has appealed to Anambra Government for improved remuneration. The association is also seeking full implementation of the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure, CONMESS.

The association made the appeal when its leadership paid an advocacy visit to Joe Akabuike, commissioner for Health, at the Jerome Udoji Secretariat, Awka.

The commissioner told them that “the state Government is interested in the welfare of health workers and is ready to adequately motivate them for an effective healthcare delivery’’.

He pledged that their request would be looked into.

Obinna Aniagboso, president of the association, said that their appeal for improved remuneration was based on the fact that their inputs and sacrifices in the sector were yielding positive results.

He listed some of the achievements to include improved clinical services and growing the revenue of the state.

Aniagboso added that their visit became imperative on account of the inauguration of the association’s residency training and its financial contributions to the state.

He expressed sadness over the poor remuneration and 50 per cent implementation of CONMESS in the state.

The president added that states like Edo, Yobe, Sokoto, Abia, Delta and Gombe have started 100 per cent implementation on the structure, while Enugu and Imo states recorded 80 per cent.

He appealed to the government to look into their plight and motivate them for more improved healthcare service delivery.

In a vote of thanks, Micheal Egolum, secretary of the association, thanked the commissioner for granting them audience.

He re-assured the commissioner that the association would work hard to see that quality healthcare service delivery in the state would not be negotiable.
