THE Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) in Enugu State, on Tuesday, received assorted drugs and COVID-19 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) worth millions of Naira from the its headquarters in Abuja.
The drugs included; malaria drugs, antibiotics, anti-fungal, multivitamins, paracetamol, pro-cold and flu drugs among others.
The PPE equipment included; hand held infra-red thermometer, hundreds of wrap of face masks, alcohol-based sanitisers, surgical hand gloves, bleach and disinfectants.
Distributing the items to various custodial centres in Enugu, the Controller of NCoS Enugu State Command, Mr Joseph Emelue, commended the Controller-General of NCoS, Mr Ahmed Ja’afaru, for the large bulk of supply.
Emelue said that the materials would help the command respond appropriately and effectively to any COVID-19 and health issues within its centres.
He pledged to give the custodial service officers especially those that attended to the health needs of the inmates the needed protections following stipulated protocols.
According to him, this delivery of such a large catchment of drugs and PPE materials is just one among the series of distributions, which the national headquarters has been doing.
The controller said that the command had adequate medical professionals to see to the proper use and dispensing of the drugs and the PPE.
“However, before now we had made compliance to the Federal Ministry of Health and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) COVID-19 protocols compulsory for both staff and inmates.
“Before going into any of our centres, you must wash your hands with soap in running water, which is provided for at each entrance point.
“We have made washable face masks available for both staff working in the centres and inmates; while ensuring that the face masks are worn always.
“While we also have alcohol-based hand sanitisers as well at some locations,’’ he said.
The controller however, called on public-spirited individuals and philanthropists to assist the correctional service with more PPE materials and drugs.
“We will appreciate it if individuals, groups and corporate organisations help us with PPE, which are always in high demand especially in this COVID-19 pandemic period,’’ he said.
