EMMA Ugwuerua, member representing Nsukka West in Enugu House of Assembly on Saturday donated food items to vulnerable people in his constituency.
The food items were 400 bags of rice, 400 bags of beans and 600 tubers of yam.
Ugwuerua, who is the House Committee Chairman on Judiciary, Public Petitions, Ethics and Privileges, handed over the food items to councilors of the 11 wards in Nsukka West constituency for sharing to the poor people in their wards.
He said the gesture was to help the poor people in his constituency to get food to eat during this difficult period of lockdown occasioned by COVID-19.
“These 400 bags of rice, 400 bags of beans and 600 tubers of yam should be shared among the eleven wards that made up Nsukka West constituency.
“Councilors and President General of town unions should ensure that targeted vulnerable people are given these food items to mitigate hardship during this lockdown.
“This palliative should be given to all who deserved it in the eleven wards not minding their political or religion affiliations,” he said.
The lawmaker, who is also the proprietor of Nsukka College of Education, said he donated the items to complement efforts of Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi and Nsukka Council Chairman, Chief Patrick Omeje.
“I know Ugwuanyi and Omeje have recently shared food palliatives to vulnerable people in my constituency, this is my own contribution to complement their efforts,” he said.
He urged people of his constituency to always wash their hands, maintain social distancing, wear their face masks as well as obey other instructions from medical experts that would help to control the spread of the deadly virus.
“By next week I will inaugurate a sensitisation committee that will visit the 11 wards and sensitise the people more to the deadly nature of COVID-19.
“Do not allow anybody to deceive you that coronavirus is not real, thousands of people that have died across the globe is eloquent testimony that the virus is real and deadly, he said.
Speaking, Nsukka LG Chairman Omeje, who was represented by Mr Paully Eze, the Special Assistant to the Chairman on Political Matters, commended the lawmaker for the palliative.
“What you have done today shows the volume of love you have for your constituency as well as effective representation.
“I urge those who are going to share this food items to ensure that targeted vulnerable people in the 11 wards get this palliatives to cushion the effect of lockdown caused by coronavirus pandemic,” he said.
Responding on behalf of the councilors, the leader of Nsukka Legislative Council, Mr Celestine Ugwuoke applauded the state lawmaker for the palliative for the vulnerable people in the constituency.
Ugwuoke promised that the councilors, working in synergy with President General of town unions would ensure that only the vulnerable people were given the food items.
