UWAKWE Abugu of Faculty of Law, University of Abuja, has called on medical personnel in the country to change their poor attitude to patients.

Abugu gave the advice in Abuja on Monday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

He said that about 90 per cent of medical mishaps were caused by the poor attitude of medical personnel.

According to him, many Nigerians don’t know they have medical right under the law.

“Until they claim their rights and hold medical personnel accountable for their action ,they will not stop the negligence.

“We need to create awareness because most medical personnel know that some Nigerians don’t know their rights and continue to behave they way they do.

“So, once there is a change of attitude on their part, a lot of difference would be noticed,” he said.

“The fact that somebody is brought into an emergency ward and you are there painting your nails or face, as a nurse or a doctor, failing to answer to emergency call has nothing to do with your competence, skill or equipment.

“Nigerians need to take it upon themselves to enforce their medical and health rights,” he said.

Abugu advised that patients should make complaints to the necessary department of the hospital if not satisfied with the hospital’s services.

He said that patients could also report poor services of personnel to the hospital heads as most times they would not know what had happened before taking legal action. (NAN)
