Edo WHO committee seeks FCT support on polio eradication

A committee of World Health Organisation (WHO) Edo State has sought the support of the Health and Human Services Secretariat (HHSS), FCT Administration to assist in total eradication of polio disease in the state.

Dr Faith Ireye, the leader of the committee who is also in Abuja on disease eradication training made the call at a courtesy visit to the acting Executive Secretary, HHSS, Alhaji Musa Abduraheem on Monday.

She said that the committee was working toward total polio eradication in the state, hence the need for the support of the administration to guaranty a certification of total freedom of  the polio disease in the state.

“We are here to seek the support of the administration; we are here to support our brothers and sisters here and to get our standard documentation for certification of polio free.

“We are going to the field after the training, some supervisors have already been trained, the training is for us to get best practices, identify gap and take corrective measures on the field and correct immediately.

“Why we have to see the authority here today is because those gaps required some form of support; we cannot just come to somebody’s house and start going to the field without permission,’’ Ireye said.

She however called for the administration support to enable the committee achieved its aim.

Dr Iwot Ndaeyo, the acting Executive Secretary, FCT Primary Health Care called on every state to key into the idea of making Nigeria a polio free nation.

According to Ndaeyo, the FCT administration was already putting in place structures that will guaranty the drive of making FCT free of the disease.

“The National Agency of the primary health board is very interested in this exercise, every state must cooperate with the FCT to attain its free certification of the disease, we are making move to ensure sustainable structures are put in place,’’ he said.

On his part, Dr Mathew Ashikeni, the Director of Special Duties who represented the acting Executive Secretary, HHSS, assured the committee of necessary support from the FCT administration.

Ashikeni said that the fight against polio was a very passionate programme even in other countries of the world and that the FCT administration was happy about the positive result it was observing toward the eradication of the disease.

“We are happy that there seems to be positive result toward the eradication of polio in FCT, I want to assured you that you will get every necessary support.

“We are waiting anxiously for the WHO feedback, we have put a lot to ensure we get a positive feedback toward the eradication of the disease and we are sure we will get there. (NAN)
