THE National Directorate of Employment (NDE) has urged physically challenged people to participate more in its various training programmes being organised for the unemployed in the country.

Dr Chika Onah, the NDE Coordinator in Enugu state, made call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Enugu on Friday.

Onah emphasised that it was necessary for the physically challenged to acquire training that would make them self-reliant and enable them to contribute their own quota to the society.

“We do not just end with vocational skill training for normal people, sometimes we organise training we call “training for people with special needs,” and under this, we train people with disabilities.

“We can still organise the same training for the normal people and people living with disabilities, depending on the kind of disabilities.

“During the orientation programme, we encourage them to join those people without challenges to acquire training, making them realise that there is ability in disability.

“Some who are living with disabilities often complain, thinking they cannot gain from the training due to their physical challenges.

“When we convince and counsel them, they usually find out that they are able to do something positive for a living, at the end of the training,” she said.

According to the state coordinator, NDE resettles the trainees with equipment or funds to start up businesses in accordance with the skills they acquired during the training. (NAN)
