THE Anambra State Ministry of Health has embarked on massive sensitisation of the citizenry on causes, symptoms and measures to prevent and contain cholera outbreaks.

Chijioke Obagha, State epidemiologist, in an ABS interactive programme, described Cholera as a type of diarrhea that almost everyone experiences occasionally.

“It is characterised by passing of rice-watery colour stool accompanied by abdominal pain and cramps.”

Obagha noted that cholera could be prevented through use of clean and safe drinking water, maintaining proper sanitation practices and adoption of good sewage disposal system.

“Other ways to prevent cholera outbreak include maintaining proper and good personal hygiene practices, hand washing with soap after defecation, cleaning a child who defecated and disposal of stool,” he said.

Obagha maintained that fruits and vegetables should be washed very well before eating, while food must be properly cooked before eating.

He enjoined those that sell food within dirty environments to stop, urging them to desist from such unwholesome practices because of its public health implications.

Obagha expressed concerns over the source of cooking and drinking water of some of the food vendors in semi-urban and rural communities, whose only source of water is from streams.

He noted that borehole would be preferred to streams or rivers as sources of drinking water.

The epidemiologist called on well-meaning individuals to help government to improve access to portable and safe drinking water by sinking boreholes in various communities in the state.

He enjoined the general public to visit the nearest health centres if they notice any symptoms of the ailment for proper diagnosis and treatment.
