THE Nigerian Woman and Healthcare Symposium, an NGO, has called for active participation of the Nigerian women towards the attainment of Universal Healthcare Coverage (UHC) in Nigeria.

Dr Ogeoma Ukeka, Project Coordinator of the NGO, made the call in a statement issued on Saturday, ahead of the May 28, International Day of Action for Women’s Health.

The theme of the 2019 symposium is tagged: “Universal Health Coverage and the Nigerian Woman’’.

“The Nigerian woman is faced with myriads of socio-cultural factors that negatively impact on their physical wellbeing and accessibility to appropriate health services.

“Economic and educational barriers also affect and lower her standard of living when compared to her male counterpart.

“The Nigerian women must be agents of change to turn their situation around,” she said.

Ukeka said that the symposium aimed at improving the health indices of Nigeria through the active participation of the Nigerian woman towards the attainment of UHC in the country.

“In this present national and global political level, letting the Nigerian Woman lead in the drive for UHC is evidently the way to go.

“The events will feature participants from the healthcare and associated sectors of the country,” she said.

She said the symposium would provide a platform for interaction and deliberation on the role of the Nigerian Woman in ensuring healthcare access for her entire family.

NAN reports that May 28, was set aside as the International Day of Action for Women’s Health, and has been celebrated since 1987. (NAN)
