THE Chairman of Badagry Local Government in Lagos State, Mr Olusegun Onilude, on Wednesday said the council would organise a five-day enlightenment programme on prevention of Lassa fever.
Onilude told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Badagry that the programme, scheduled to start on Jan.31, would educate people on the menace of the fever.
According to the chairman, “we need to alert our people on necessary things to do to prevent the outbreak of this contagious disease.
“The programme is to put them on alert, to educate them on how to cover what they eat very well and imbibe hand-washing habit regularly.
“This is the awareness we want to create these five days; our medical personnel will articulate all key points that will be needed during the programme,” he said.
Onilude stated that the council was putting all the logistics in place to start the sensitisation programme on Friday.
“We have alerted our health centres to be educating people who have come for medical attention on how to prevent themselves from this disease.
“We have a unit that is responsible for that in the centre; that is the Health Education Unit.
“The best way to tackle a problem is to first identify that the problem is real, once everybody is aware, it is solved.
“But today, not everybody who listens to radio, television, or read newspapers that can know about the prevalent ailment.’’
Onilude, however, noted that the council would create awareness on the disease through outdoor jingles and road shows, including sensitisation at the various health centres and communities.
“We will call a meeting of Community Development Council (CDC), intimate them about Lassa fever, while our medical officers will address them,” he said.
The council chief noted that the CDC would now spread the information when they get to their respective communities.
Speaking on the awareness programme, Mrs Bamidele Layode-Abdul-Kadir, the Supervisor for Health in the council, said the first day of the programme would feature a road show.
“T-shirts will be provided for the people, who will be part of the road show; the shirt will educate the residents on what to do, to prevent the disease.
“They will walk from the council secretariat down to the market, to Badagry Town Hall, the venue of the programme.
“There will be screening at the venue, and different medical doctors will educate residents on what to do, to prevent them from these diseases in the country.
“As we are doing this, our officials will go round the town to educate the market women and men on the disease,” she said. (NAN)
