LAGOS State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH),Ikeja, says it is set to collaborate with the Kanu Heart Foundation and EMERGENCY, an NGO, to provide free surgical treatments for cardiology patients in the state.

Its Chief Medical Director, Prof. Adetokunbo Fabamwo, made this known in Lagos, while receiving the representatives of Kanu Foundation and management EMERGENCY in his office.

Fabamwo, while commending the efforts of the team, called for a better working relationship among all the parties involved.

He said that the collaboration would yield transfer of skills to doctors at LASUTH.

Earlier, Mr Nwankwo Kanu, Founder of the foundation, said that the vision of his foundation was to attract expertise in cardiac-related surgeries to Nigeria.

According to him, this will prevent the patients from the rigour of traveling abroad to receive cardiology treatment.

“This collaboration will yield positive results so that our patients can be taken care of locally,” Kanu said.

Luca Rolla, the Regional Programme Coordinator of EMERGENCY , said that his team was excited to be in Lagos to follow up on cases that had been handled by the Kanu Heart Foundation.

Rolla said the organisation’s commitment was to continue to provide humanitarian services to the indigent patients at the hospital (LASUTH).

The programme coordinator said, “We will be glad to collaborate with you in the training of indigenous doctors from LASUTH, both here in Nigeria and outside the country.”

EMERGENCY is an international health-based NGO that provides free high-quality medical and surgical treatment to victims of war, landmines and poverty.
