MONGOLIA’S Ministry of Health on Tuesday urged citizens to follow instructions on proper use of antibiotics, following concerns of overuse in the country.

The ministry said in a statement that “antibiotics are one of the great advancements in medicine in the world.

“But antibiotic overuse can cause bacterial resistance: patients must follow prescribed use of antibiotics.”

The ministry stated that the call was made after a survey by World Health Organisation (WHO) found that antibiotics were used far more in Mongolia than in any other country.

Currently, it noted, the East Asian country was also marking World Antibiotic Awareness Week with various events nationwide.

An antibiotic is a type of antimicrobial substance active against bacteria and is the most important type of antibacterial agent for fighting bacterial infections.

Antibiotic medications are widely used in the treatment and prevention of such infections, they may either kill or inhibit the growth of bacteria.
